چکیده
One of the visual tasks adopted as an "exemplar" for techniques by the Alvey MMI-007 consortium has been the detection and identification of vehicles in natural scenes. We have adopted a knowledge-based approach to the task, which seeks to explain the 2-D image in terms of known context and known geometry of the 3-D object being identified. This approach differs markedly from the more familiar technique of computing a 3-D description of the scene using information derived from stercopsis, or motion, or shading, prior to matching against stored 3-D models.
